- LETTING DAVID BE DAVID: Soldier, Sheriff, Medical Student
My twin brother, David, suffered from schizophrenia, and he often pretended to be what he was not. Of the 3 roles depicted here, only that of "soldier" was accurate-he Did enlist in the Army, although he never earned the rank of Private First Class before he received a Medical Discharge. He claimed to be a Vietnam veteran, which was not true, but this distinction is noted on his tombstone.

- AT THE DAWNING OF HUMANITY
This mixed media painting was made on canvas board with Oil Bar sticks, a new medium for me. Although our beginnings as a family have been on my mind and the subject of my art, this piece is a departure from my familiar themes. Only after I completed it did I recognize what it represents.

- BEFORE WE WERE GROWNUPS
This Assemblage which holds 3 family photos is dominated by the picture of my two brothers and me on a very patient pony. It was taken by a wandering photographer in the 1950's, who rounded up business like a Pied Piper, tempting kids with promises of pony rides and cowboy outfits like their favorite heroes, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans.

- IN THE BEGINNING: Two Become One
In this second of the 3 bureau drawers, these photographs show my paternal grandfather with 5 of his 7 brothers; my father and aunt as children; and my mother with her mother.

- CIRCLE GAME 4
Circles are a metaphor for the Seasons of Life, as in the Medicine Wheel, but they also represent second chances and opportunities to get it right. The puffy circles at the bottom of the piece came from hundreds made by my mother sewn together for a long skirt.
